FYW-1137 Freedom or Oppression: Human Rights in Asia There are thousands of political prisoners in Asia. Leaders who order their detention contend that “Asian Values” and unique historical circumstances obviate the need to protect rights that many in the West take for granted. This course examines the “Asian Values” debate, the foundations of human rights theory in Western liberal democracies and in Confucianism, and how human rights can best be safeguarded in Asia. It examines the relationship between human rights and democracy. 4 credits.
