COM-451 Civic Media

Prerequisite: COM-102
Exploration of the tension that is created when digital media is used to foster civic engagement. Students will learn about democracy, intended and unintended audiences, fake news and misinformation, and possibilities for social movements and advocacy. Students can expect to engage in lively discussions and an independent exploration of a case study of their choice, in order to better understand the relationship between civic media, (mis)information, and social movements. 4 credits.
