CEM 675 Healthcare Seminar Through this 3-course sequence, foundational interdisciplinary theories of social factors that impact health and help explain the complexity of health inequities in the United States will be reviewed to prepare students to engage in conversations and with case studies reflective of current dilemmas in health and health care. Guest lectures by professionals in the medical and health communities are included. Access to health care, including community institutions that contribute to health and well-being, and exploring community and population perspectives on health will be the focus of terms two and three. Through these topics, students will develop a systems perspective on health as well as work to build empathy and compassion for populations that experience vulnerability in the U.S. health systems.
Students apply this learning to a topic of interest that supports reflection on the theme of community engaged medicine. During each term, students complete a paper that serves as a chapter towards the five chapter thesis completed by the end of the third term. 3 credits.
