Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Track

To fulfill BMS track requirements, students must complete ten or more biology courses, each of which must be at least three credits. They must also complete three chemistry courses for a total of 13 credit-bearing science courses:

BMS Students whose career preparations require successful completion of science and mathematics courses outside of biology may substitute one course from those areas for certain biology courses with the approval of the department chair.  Moreover, two 2-credit biology courses numbered 200 or greater completed during the May Experience can be combined to fulfill one of the elective course requirements for either the B.A. or B.S. degree.

Teacher Certification

Students interested in teaching biology in secondary schools may take advantage of our teacher certification program at the undergraduate level or pursue certification through Furman’s Master of Arts in Teaching. Consult with the Education Department (https://www.furman.edu/academics/education) to learn about the programs of teacher education.

Course Options for First-Year Students

If you are interested in exploring classes within this department, here are some possibilities to consider.


  • The pre-requisite for all of the genetics classes (BIO 210, 211, 212, 213) is BIO-111L
  • BIO-222 Research and Analysis:  First-year students, except transfer students, can enroll in this class during the spring semester) Prerequisites: any FYW and any BIO course completed at Furman.
  • BIO-230 The Nature of Diversity, Prerequisite: BIO-111 or EES-112 (Environmental Science).
