FYW-1321 African American Agency in the Civil War Era GER: FYW (First Year Writing Seminar) Students will explore African American agency in the mid-nineteenth century in order to develop and refine their college-level writing, critical thinking, and organizational skills through research and expository argumentative writing. Students will examine, present on, and write essays investigating themes including, but not limited to, the agency of African Americans within enslavement and their challenges to the legal system. Students will analyze and discuss how popular culture, historical institutions, and diverse audiences engage with the topic and will contribute their own ideas by writing in multiple genres. 4 credits.
