REL-230 Religion in America

GER: HA (Historical Analysis of Human Interactions) and IEJ (Identities, Equity, and Justice)
Historical survey and analysis of religious movements in America from the 17th century until the present. Emphasis placed on principal denominations of Judaism and Christianity and newer movements growing from the latter.  Consideration of how differing theologies and practices raise questions about the founding principle of religious liberty, national identity, and other sometimes competing social and cultural norms.  Study begins with encounters with Native American traditions and ends with questions raised by increasing religious diversity and secularity.  4 credits.
