REL-328 Religions in Japan


GER: UQ (Ultimate Questions) and WC (World Cultures)
Introduces the role of religion in Japanese culture. Examines historic Buddhist, Shinto, Confucian, Daoist, and Christian forms and how these relate to contemporary practice, piety, and beliefs. Explores the impact of contemporary “New Religions” in Japanese life. Special attention given to the role of pilgrimage, ancestor and funeral rites, and concepts of karma, rebirth, enlightenment, and afterlife.  4 credits.
