POL-217 Pursuing Justice: The Fight to Kill Jim Crow

In 1896 the United States Supreme Court announced in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson that the separation of people by race was legal if public accommodations are equal. The “separate but equal” doctrine ushered in full-scale segregation in the south. This seminar will study the legal and social campaigns of prominent civil rights leaders and civil rights groups to overturn the social and political impact of the Plessy v. Ferguson decision in the lives of African-Americans. 4 credits.
