REL-375 Christian Theology and Depression Considers historical theological interpretations of depression, including the spiritual sin of acedia; a “wilderness experience”; a test or instruction from God; Puritan melancholy resulting from fear of hell; a “dark night of the soul.” Second half of course examines new perspectives in contemporary theologies and how these relate to current understandings of depression’s context, social and cultural environment, individual experience, and related medical issues; and how religious communities and individuals have incorporated these new perspectives into supportive practices. 2 credits.
