SPN-308 Introduction to Spanish Sociolinguistics GER: HB (Empirical Study of Human Behavior) and IEJ (Identities, Equity, and Justice) at least one Spanish course numbered 215 or greater or appropriate placement Through an exploration of oral, written, and online data, this class will adopt a hands-on approach when examining the interface of language and society in the Spanish-speaking world. Topics include basic notions related to sociolinguistics, language attitudes and ideologies, language policy and planning, social groups and linguistic variation, and Spanish in contact with speakers of other languages, with an emphasis on Indigenous and African languages. Different methodologies of how to investigate these topics will be emphasized. 4 credits.
