MXP-207 Sustainable Development in Taiwan This course is pre-enrolled with First Year Chinese Studies Experience students who will all complete two semesters of Chinese language during the 2024-25 academic year. Student travel expenses are funded through the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment grant. Travel study course examining how Taiwan’s unique political status-de facto sovereignty without de jure international recognition-affects its development. How has Taiwan become a prosperous democracy despite international isolation and threats from the Chinese Communist Party? How do Taiwan-US-China relations impact Taiwan’s sustainable development? Can Taiwan maintain its security, develop a sustainable economy, protect its environment, and equitably provide for its citizens? The course will focus on environmental issues to explore these questions. This is a travel study course and requires permission to register.
